One of San Luis Obispo County’s most critical environmental and economic concerns has been the understanding of our many complex water resource issues and finding ways to address them.
Water is what allows us to grow our food, work our farms and build our communities. Simply put, water is the lifeblood of our county.
There’s little argument that ground water levels in the North County have been in decline. What to do about it is probably one of the most important issues North County residents will have to deal with in a long time.
Under direction from the Board of Supervisors, the county is working with a wide variety of water use stakeholders in the North County to implement a Groundwater Management Plan for the Paso Robles Groundwater Basin, which is nearing its safe annual yield.
And, to better understand our countrywide water resource needs and supply, the Board of Supervisors directed staff to update the County Master Water Plan. The plan will identify our water resources and project our needs into the future.
Additionally, this year we celebrated the completion of the Nacimiento Water Pipeline Project, which will bring additional water supplies to the communities of Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero, San Luis Obispo and Cayucos.
